The District of Lake Country (population 15,000), located in the heart of the Okanagan Valley in Central British Columbia, is seeking a Director of Planning and Development. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Director is responsible for the District’s development services functions related to planning, building inspection, business licensing, economic development and tourism, and social planning and development. This is an excellent career opportunity for a visionary and experienced local government manager who is interested in taking the next step up in their career, and assuming a senior leadership role with a progressive and innovative local government. You would become a key member of the District’s Senior Leadership Team, with significant involvement in many varied and challenging corporate initiatives and special projects. A key component of the job would be providing professional leadership, guidance, mentorship and support to an experienced and dedicated team of departmental staff.
The ideal candidate will have generalist experience and skills in a variety of local government responsibilities, combined with a post-secondary degree in urban and regional planning, public or business administration or a related field. A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible public sector management experience, ideally in a BC local government setting, would be preferred. Well-developed communication and relationship building skills, combined with knowledge and previous experience in long range planning, growth management, social and economic planning and development, project management and policy planning would be a definite asset. Some previous training and experience in the Approving Officer function, as well as familiarity with building and engineering department processes would also be an asset.
